Speeding on Noida roads will cost you Rs 2,000

NOIDA: Be prepared to shell out more for traffic offences, as the state government has made changes to the Motor Vehicles Act to increase penalties for common traffic offences in Uttar Pradesh.

The revised penalties will be effective from Wednesday and will be incorporated in the city’s e-challan system by Thursday, the traffic department said.



Those riding without helmet or driving without seatbelt will have to pay Rs 500 instead of the earlier Rs 100. Similarly, the penalty for speeding will now be Rs 2,000 for cars and motorcycles and Rs 4,000 for medium and heavy vehicles. For driving without a licence, the penalty has been increased from Rs 100 to Rs 500.

“There is a huge rise in the penalty for speeding vehicles, which is good for a city like Noida, as the maximum traffic offences recorded in Gautam Budh Nagar are that of speeding. The increased penalties should discourage violators and will also help reduce fatal accidents,” said Anil Kumar Jha, superintendent of police (traffic).

He added that the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has been informed and changes to the e-challan system will be made within two days to incorporate the higher penalties.

Meanwhile, the transport department has already informed all departments concerned and the changes will be reflected in the traffic challans issued manually from Thursday, officials said.

While the order was passed by the state government on last Friday, it was sent to districts only on Tuesday. “Higher penalties are expected to be a deterrent against traffic violations. These will also increase revenue, which will contribute towards road safety measures,” said Himesh Tiwary, assistant regional transport officer.
