BAREILLY: Body of a new-born baby girl was recovered from a roadside drain in Anand Vihari locality of Faridpur town in Bareilly district on Tuesday morning. After receiving the information, police seized the body and sent it for autopsy. An FIR against unidentified person has been lodged into the matter at Faridpur police station on the complaint of local residents. Police are now searching for the parents of the baby and are checking the records of private hospitals in the area.

The initial investigation hints towards a possibility that the foetus was aborted after sex determination.
Harishchandra Joshi, SHO, Faridpur police station, told TOI, “The baby was delivered prematurely, in the seventh or eighth month probably. We cannot rule out the possibility of sex determination before birth in this case and have registered an FIR under IPC section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) against unidentified parents. The record of local hospitals will be checked to ensure that the facts are revealed.”
A local, who wished to remain anonymous, told TOI, “There are two hospitals operating in the area where sex determination can be done by paying extra money. Complaints were made against them but no action has been taken against them as yet.”
