NEW DELHI: The

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in its
meeting held on Wednesday decided to
honour Union finance minister
Nirmala Sitharaman and external affairs minister
S Jaishankar with the
“Distinguished Alumni Award” in the third convocation of the varsity to be held in August.
Vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar tweeted: “The executive council of JNU decided to bestow the newly established Distinguished Alumni Award upon Shrimati Nirmala Sitaraman and Shri S Jaishankar in the third convocation to be held in August 2019.
They will be the first recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award.”
Sitharaman was a student of School of Social Sciences and School of International Studies for her MA and MPhil degrees, respectively. Jaishankar was also a student of School of International Studies where he completed his MPhil and doctoral research with specialisation in nuclear diplomacy.
A statement by JNU said, “Their highly-distinguished career and achievements have made the university very proud and they are a great source of inspiration for JNU students and researchers.”
Last August, JNU held its second convocation after a gap of 46 years. A controversy had erupted in the first convocation, which made the university stop the event. TNN
