Suva City Council SCC, chief executive officer Bijay Chand has resigned.

Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar confirmed that Mr Chand had tendered in his resignation earlier in the week.

She said Mr Chand was fulfilling his contractual obligations in relation to the resignation by staying on for the specified period after resignation.

She said the CEO post had been advertised and a suitable candidate would be appointed in time.

Mrs Kumar said there would be no interim appointment for the post of CEO because the Ministry of Local Government would appoint special administrators for municipal councils next week.

The reason for Mr Chand’s resignation has not been made public.

Earlier this year, Chandu Umaria, the former special administrator, took early retirement.

Mr Chand had since been in charge of operations of the SCC.

Mrs Kumar said special administrators had been selected and their appointments would be formalised next week.

Suva City Council is the biggest municipal council in the country with rates collection totalling more than $15million.
