NEW DELHI: A man died after allegedly being beaten up in Rohini’s Prem Nagar on Saturday evening on the suspicion of stealing a mobile phone.
DCP (Rohini) SD Mishra said that a case under IPC Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) has been registered. A preliminary investigation has revealed that the unidentified victim, who was in his early 20s, was caught by a shop owner, Amit, on Saturday evening.
Amit told police that he runs a mobile phone shop on the main Mubarakpur Road in Prem Nagar.
Last month, the victim had stolen a phone and the DVR of a CCTV camera from his shop. Amit later managed to get the footage showing the man stealing the items.
Around 7pm on Saturday, when the victim was allegedly peeping into the shop with another associate, Amit chased them. He caught the men with the help of his neighbours and brought them to his shop where they were thrashed by the shopkeepers and the public.
Later, the shopkeepers decided to let one of them leave. They detained the victim hoping that his family would come and pay for the stolen mobile phone. However, the victim fell unconscious and was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead. The PCR was subsequently informed about the incident.
A team inspected the scene of crime and recorded the statements of eyewitnesses. The CCTV footage of the area is being scanned. Efforts are being made to identify the victim. His body has been preserved in the mortuary and an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
