NEW DELHI: Two robbers attacked the Ghazipur toll plaza and made away with approximately Rs 70,000 on Thursday night. Cops said that the men, armed with pistols, hit the toll operators with the pistol butts and took away the cash available at the counters.
The incident happened on Thursday around 9.30pm. The toll operators told the cops that two men had ridden a black motorcycle up to the operators booth and parked it there.
They then pulled out pistols and started threatening the operators to hand over whatever cash was present at the counters. Those who resisted were beaten with the pistol butts.
After collecting the money, the men broke the glass panes of the toll plaza before driving away towards Uttar Pradesh. The operators informed police and the toll authorities, but by the time they reached the spot, the two men had long fled.
Jasmeet Singh, DCP (East), said on Saturday that investigative teams have been constituted to pursue the case. A piece of footage from the CCTV cameras at the toll gate went viral on Saturday. It captured the two suspects in the act. One of them wearing a black shirt is seen holding a pistol and walking up to a toll booth even as a white car passes through the gates.
The nine-second footage shows the suspect smashing the window of the toll booth as he demands that the operator hand over the money. In another shot, the suspect is seen getting off a motorcycle along with his associate who is seen wearing a helmet.
The cops are now analysing the CCTV footage to try and identify the two suspects and to determine the sequence of events on Thursday night. The photos of the suspects are being shared with local informers and other police units in an effort to identify them.
The investigating teams have a few angles that they are pursuing, including finding out from the toll company officials whether they suspected anyone of being behind the robbery.
Having recorded the statement of some eyewitnesses, the cops have registered a case for robbery at the Ghazipur police station.
