NIZAMABAD: Massive tension erupted at Nizamabad’s Jalalpur village, on Saturday, after a thief was beaten to death by locals, on being caught red-handed trying to steal valuables from a house. Enraged over the brutality, relatives of the thief, Ketavat Shankar, from neighbouring Shankora village attacked Jalalpur residents and even tried to organise his cremation within the same house he burgled.
They arranged a funeral pyre, before the police intervened and foiled their plans.
It all began when Shankar, along with one of his accomplices, broke into the house of Pallerla Bhoomaiah. When residents of the village spotted him, they nabbed Shankar, tied him to an electric pole and beat him. He died on the spot. Furious over the killing, Shankar’s relatives went on rampage. According to reports, the mob wanted to cremate him within the same premises where he was beaten to death. The groups relented only after police reached the spot.
Confirming the incident, A Raghu, additional commissioner of police, Bodhan division said: “The person died after a few people attacked him and beat him for stealing something valuable from one of the houses in the village. There was a fight between the deceased person’s relatives and villagers but it was brought under control. They tried to organise a cremation in the house but we stopped it.” Police also spoke with the two parties and pacified them, he added.
Following the clashes, the police posted a picket in Jalalpur village.
