SANFORD — The DeLand Suns scored three runs in the top of the first inning, and cruised to a 7-3 victory over the Seminole County Scorpions in a Florida Collegiate Summer League game at Sanford Memorial Stadium on Saturday night.

The Suns won their third consecutive game to move to 8-3 on the season, and completed a two-game road sweep over the Scorpions, who fell for the fifth consecutive game and are 2-9.

Hunter Fornari, a Daytona Beach native who played his high school baseball at Spruce Creek, reached base five times in the victory. Fornari singled twice, doubled, and walked twice, scoring three runs. Third-year Sun Alan Alonso also had three hits, including a two-run home run in the first inning.

DeLand High alum Brandon Castle earned the victory for the Suns, tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Castle relieved Florida State righthander Cole Beverlin, who struck out eight in his 4.1 innings of work. The duo of Nathan Palmer and Hudson Widrig threw scoreless innings to follow up Castle.

The entire Florida League will have Sunday off before play resumes Monday. The Suns will welcome the Sanford River Rats to Melching Field on Monday morning, with first pitch scheduled for 11 in DeLand as part of Kids' Day fesitivities.

FCSL strikeout leader Hudson Widrig will start for the Suns, who are 2-1 against Sanford this season.
