Army Major killed in Anantnag gunbattle was from Meerut

Major Ketan Sharma, 32, who was killed in a gunfight between security forces and militants in Jammu & Kashmir's Anantnag district on Monday morning, was a resident of Shradhapuri Colony in Meerut. Major Sharma was posted at 19 Rashtriya Rifles, and was inducted into the Indian Army in December 2012.

MEERUT: Major Ketan Sharma, 32, who was killed in a gunfight between security forces and militants in Jammu & Kashmir's Anantnag district on Monday morning, was a resident of Shradhapuri Colony in Meerut. Major Sharma was posted at 19 Rashtriya Rifles, and was inducted into the Indian Army in December 2012.
A pall of gloom has descended on the family. According to the deceased's uncle, Ashok Kumar Sharma, "In the afternoon we were given the information that my nephew was injured in a gunbattle with militants in J&K, but in the evening around 5 pm we received official confirmation of my nephews' martyrdom.
A bullet had hit him in his temple."
According to the family, Major Ketan Sharma had come home on leave and had left for J&K on May 27 to join his unit.
Major Sharma is survived by his 4-year-old daughter and wife Ira Sharma.
Major Sharma and a militant were killed, while another officer and two troopers were injured on Monday in an encounter in Anantnag district.
