In November 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr shot all six members of his family in a killing spree that became the backstory to author Jay Anson's 1977 bestseller The Amityville Horror. Earlier this year we saw the release of the movie called The Amityville Murders, which covered the real-life backstory of the infamous Amityville Horror and the murders that seemingly kicked off the titular "horror." And today we have word that another film is headed our way from Get Out producer Shaun Redick and Tag producer Todd Garner which will be covering the Defeo murders. This time it's called Amityville 1974 and The Wonderfilm Media Corporation announced today that this new movie will begin principal photography in November.

Amityville 1974 is all set to be directed by The Remaining filmmaker Casey La Scala from a screenplay he wrote which will shift the focus of its horror back to the DeFeo murders. La Scala said in a statement.

"This is a story that takes its jumping-off point from the true facts surrounding the Defeo tragedy but also focuses on the human drama that took place inside a family as they were relentlessly stalked by a terrifying evil."

Get Out producer Shaun Redick and Tag producer Todd Garner are behind this new movie and will produce along with Founder of Wonderfilm Media Jeff Bowler for Wonderfilm. Yvette Yates will Executive Produce along with Bret Saxon. Wonderfilm will fully finance the film, and Wonderfilm Global and the powers that be behind the scenes will launch worldwide sales at TIFF.

Producer and Wonderfilm Media founder Jeff Bowler says on Amityville 1974.

"We are beyond thrilled to introduce Amityville 1974. Casey has a truly unique and terrifying vision for the fright franchise, and audiences will experience horror like never before with this film."

As all of you know - because I mentioned it above - this is not the first time the 1974 Ronald DeFeo Jr. murders have been the basis for a Amityville Horror motion picture. The Haunting of Sharon Tate and The Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson director Daniel Farrands helmed a film which covered the same ground called The Amityville Murders last year. That film starred John Robinson as Butch DeFeo, Chelsea Ricketts as Dawn DeFeo, Diane Franklin as Louise DeFeo, Noa Brenner as Allison DeFeo, Zane Austin as Marc DeFeo, Kue Lawrence as Jody DeFeo, and Paul Ben-Victor as Ronnie DeFeo.

But the most famous adaptation of the Amityville Murders goes to director Stuart Rosenberg's 1979 fright flick The Amityville Horror starring Josh Brolin's dad, James Brolin along with Superman star Margot Kidder, Rod Steiger, and Murray Hamilton. That film, or instead author Jay Anson's novel was then remade in 2005 by director Andrew Douglas and Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes. That version starred Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, and Philip Baker Hall.

Personally, I don't know if we need yet another adaptation of these murders on the big screen. Hell, we even saw them played out for the most part in director James Wan's The Conjuring 2 starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. And I'm pretty sure that seeing Wan take on the Amityville murders is about as good as we're ever going to get at the movies. But maybe this new movie will prove me wrong.
