Delhi: Kin of rape survivor attack doctors

NEW DELHI: There was chaos in the emergency department of a hospital on Tuesday when the relatives of a six-year-old rape survivor attacked doctors and guards after being told to take the child somewhere else.
The child was raped near her home in Bawana by a 45-year-old neighbour. He was caught by locals and handed over to the police. The child was taken to Maharishi Valmiki Hospital in Rohini by police where she required examination under general anaesthesia, which wasn’t available in the hospital.So the staff there referred her to Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital. That’s when the relatives of the girl, who had also accompanied the police, got angry.
“The attendants of the patient refused to go. They started arguing and would not take no for an answer. Before anything could be done to assuage them, a crowd barged into the emergency and created a ruckus,” said a source.
The attack came in the aftermath of several such attacks on doctors across the country, including a recent one at AIIMS, which led to a nationwide strike.
CCTV cameras at the hospital captured the incident and a clip of it went viral on social media. The footage showed a group of men trying to enter the hospital ward forcibly and being stopped by guards. They clashed with the guards while others started throwing furniture. A few others were also seen smashing things with their helmets.
The situation was brought under control after police personnel present at the hospital intervened. An investigation has started.
Meanwhile, DCP (outer-north) Gaurav Sharma said the rapist, a labourer, was arrested and booked under POCSO Act, and he will be produced before a magistrate.
Investigation revealed that the girl was playing outside her house in the evening when the labourer took her away to a desolate spot and sexually assaulted her. But a neighbour heard her cries and caught the man in the act.
