NHL DRAFT: Will the Karl Goehring hire make NHL teams more intrigued with UND goaltenders?

karlgoehring.jpg
Karl Goehring chats with UND goalie Cam Johnson during the 2016 NCAA Frozen Four in Tampa.

For more than 20 years, from 1988 to 2009, no UND starting goaltender went on to play a game in the NHL.

Then, in 2010, former UND goalie Karl Goehring (who dressed in an NHL game) returned to campus to coach the program's netminders on a volunteer basis.

He coached four starting goaltenders in seven years. Three of those four suited up in the NHL this season, a school record.

Goehring spent the last two years with Tampa Bay's organization, but returned last month as a full-time UND assistant coach.

Perhaps, it's not surprising that at least one NHL team has raised that point in internal meetings when discussing whether to draft sophomore-to-be Adam Scheel ( read story on him here ) or UND recruit Cameron Rowe ( read story on him here ) this weekend in Vancouver.

Scheel and Rowe are both on the radars of NHL teams. If they both get picked during Rounds 2 through 7 on Saturday, it would mark just the second time in program history that two UND goalies have gone in the same draft.

The only other time it happened was 1984, when Greg Stome went in the sixth round to the Los Angeles Kings and Scott Brower went in the 12th round to the New York Rangers.

NHL teams are looking at Scheel and Rowe because of their talent level, but it doesn't hurt to have a highly regarded goalie coach on staff, either.

"I met Karl last year at the Warren Strelow camp after he was already working for Tampa," said Rowe, who will come to campus in the fall of 2020. "He was fantastic and he seems like a great guy. I knew it was someone who I liked working with. Moving forward, I think he's going to be a great addition to the staff. I'll be able to bounce a lot of things off of him. He understands the fans and the types of scenarios that you can be in."

Scheel committed to UND while Goehring was still the volunteer goalie coach.

"I was kind of sad when he took the job with Tampa, because I thought he'd be so good to work with," Scheel said. "He's a really smart guy and a really good guy."
