At least two properties on Fantasy Island in Nadi have been infested with termites.

Fantasy Island Managing Director, Abbas Ali said the infestation began three months ago and he claimed the response from the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji officials in the Western Division proved futile.

He said the officials only came on a later date to spray the first property but by that time, the problem had worsened.

Mr Ali suspects the infestation on the first property had spread to the neighbour’s home about two weeks ago.

“We didn’t know about it only when they came to start spraying then only we came to know about this and now it has spread to the next house,” he said.

“This is how you have to say that it moves from one compound to another and because the nature of damage done to the building and furniture and the cabinets and kitchen, it is very destructive, it can destroy the whole building in time if it is not controlled.

“This is a threat and we have to see how the Government can control this. One of my staff called Biosecurity and they didn’t turn up so we suspected white ants.”

He said if the officials don’t take the message seriously the problem could spread throughout the Island.

“We suspect that the people who are buying building materials like timber from an infested area can move from there to other places.”

Mr Ali added a notice was given to all residents about the issue of termites on the Island.

Meanwhile, when the Fiji Sun contacted the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji yesterday, the Authority stated that a statement would be given today.
