BIDAR: Nearly 1,200 students from the Shaheen Group of Educational Institutions in Bidar, an otherwise backward district, took the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) this year. College authorities are expecting their students to bag nearly 10 per cent of government medical seats in Karnataka and about 0.7 per cent of medical seats across India. They say at least 435 students from Shaheen Group of Educational Institutions should notch up government quota medical seats in the country this time.
Last year, 304 students secured government quota seats; the number was 83 in 2013.
Thouseef Madikeri, CEO of Shaheen Education Foundation, told TOI: “Special NEET coaching is given to students of classes 11 and 12. A test is conducted every week, (the level gets tougher in class 12) and students are segregated based on their ranks. Every week, the list of toppers is updated online. The slow learners get special focus. Faculty members with more than 15 years of experience train these students, who can also opt for interactive online classes.”
Residential students are required to dedicate four hours to study every day. Classes begin at 7.30am and end at 9pm. Residential students get a break on Sunday. For day scholars, regular class ends at 5.30pm, but they can opt for the study hours by staying on campus till 9pm.
Shaheen Group founder Abdul Qadeer Sahib is credited with introducing Hifzul-Quran PlusCourse for madrassa students since 2012. The aim being to integrate Madrasa-educated students into the mainstream. In the recently concluded NEET exams, 17 students who took the Hifzul-Quran PlusCourse cleared NEET.
This year, 1,176 students were specially trained for NEET at the institute’s two girls and one boys campus. Also, around 2,600 students have taken admission to class 11 this academic year. “For the first time, we are expecting nearly 435 students to bag government medical seats. Last year, students from this institute bagged nearly eight per cent of the government seats in Karnataka,” said Thouseef. About 40 per cent of the students at this institute are non-Muslims.
