What’s new on Netflix and what’s leaving in April 2024

In a way, Netflix is a victim of its own success. In addition to successfully launching 3 Body Problem and The Gentlemen in March, Netflix also had a hit with Damsel, a fantasy film starring Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown. But because Netflix is the No. 1 streamer and wants to stay on top, it can’t rest on its laurels in April.

That’s one of the reasons why Netflix is kicking off April with Ripley, which features Sherlock‘s Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley, the antihero from the 1999 thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley. Among the other originals coming this month are an animated update of the ’70s sitcom Good Times, DC’s Dead Boy Detectives, and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver.

Unlike some of its streaming rivals, Netflix has so far been able to weather the slowdown in production from last year's Hollywood strikes. There have still been big Netflix originals like 3 Body Problem, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Gentlemen, and Ripley. But Netflix has also maintained momentum with key additions from other networks and studios. There's no better example of that this week than the two latest shows to debut on Netflix: Killing Eve and Black Sails.

Killing Eve was a BBC America original spy thriller that was already a hit on cable, and is finding an even bigger audience as it climbs the list of the most popular shows on Netflix. Starz's TV-MA pirate series Black Sails isn't far behind. And while Black Sails only had modest ratings on Starz, it may also reach a far wider audience than ever before.
