Medicos exposed to ‘Chinese yoga’

Students of Government Medical College here had a pleasant surprise on Friday as they were exposed to a new type of yoga, ‘Chinese yoga,’ at an event organised on the occasion of International Day of Yoga.

A group of children and teenagers, wearing traditional Chinese dress, performed a series of exercises and postures, such as slow, circular movements all the while employing regulated breathing and focused meditation with Chinese music on the background.

They were guided by their master Shifu Mohamed Shafeer of Chennai. He has branches of his school in Tiruchi and Thanjavur. Dean Kumudha Lingaraj and Resident Medical Officer Selvam participated in the event.

At the South Zone Cultural Centre, Thanjavur, the organisers clubbed World Music Day celebration with International Day of Yoga events. School students performed yoga.

Collector A. Annadurai and centre director M. Balasubramoniam were present. Musical and dance programmes were performed by students of SASTRA Deemed University and Annai College, and young disciples of Sivanesan Oduvar of Thanjavur.

Tiruvarur

At the Sports Amenities Centre, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Tiruvarur, around 400 employees and students performed yoga. Vice-Chancellor A.P. Dash also took part in the exercise. Registrar S. Bhuvaneswari was present.
