Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao and Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena honoured wards of journalists of print and electronic media who scored high marks in SSLC and Plus Two examinations in 2018-19 at a function here on Sunday.
I. Kavyadarshini, J. Tamilselvan, M. Bhagyalakshmi, K. Abinesh Sharma, M. Bhargavi Bharathi, P. Nishanth, M. Chandramouli and M. Siva were presented with shawls and shields at the event organised by Ramanathapuram Journalists Association (RJA).
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Rao said the media, both print and electronic, had been a great source of inspiration for the district administration to focus on people’s issues and redress their grievances. Media representatives not only contacted him to seek clarifications on news developments but also brought to his notice issues concerning the people.
The media played a challenging and responsible role, which was why it was hailed as the fourth pillar of democracy. In several instances, it was the first respondent and he received feedback from the media before officials briefed him.
Stating that he had been maintaining a cordial relationship with the media, Mr. Rao who recently received Green award, said if he had achieved anything big, part of the credit should go to it.
The SP said ever since he was posted in the district more than two years ago, he had been enjoying the support of the media in maintaining law and order.
Chelladurai Abdullah, chairman, Syed Ammal Trust, offered to help journalists in educating their wards in educational institutions run by the trust in the district.
RJA president K. Danapalan, joint secretary G. Ilangovan and treasurer M. Mageswaran were among others who addressed the function.
