Props to Cirque du Soleil's most intricate 'world of wonders'

By Laura Chung

Cirque du Soleil's 35th incursion, Kurios - Cabinet of Curiosities, is proving to be one of its biggest shows – with 426 props (the most of any production in the circus' history) and 65 trucks needed to transport close to 2000 tonnes of equipment.

The show, which opens in Sydney this October, will immerse audiences in the world of an ambitious seeker who defies the laws of time and space in order to reinvent everything around him. A 46-strong cast of otherworldly characters, such as Klara the Telegraph of the Invisible, turn the seeker's world upside down, as the show asks the question: 'What if by engaging our imagination and opening our minds we could unlock the door to a world of wonders?'

But the work behind the scenes has been just as impressive as the circus' talented performers.

Countless hours went into creating more than 100 costumes to dress the cast, particularly the Accordion Man’s attire, of which the costume-maker spent a week sewing the inside of the costume, and Mr Microcosmos’ nine-kilogram round belly, which took a team of prop makers 250 hours to build.
