The Victoria Government will provide $3.5 million for testing connected and automated vehicle technology on roads in the state, with the aim of making roads in the state safer.

A statement from Telstra, which is partnering with Lexus Australia in the trials, said optimised 4G networks would be used to connect vehicles to each other, traffic management centres and other services.

These would run in the cloud and would use Cellular-Vehicle-to-Everything or V2X technology.

Details of the tie-up were announced in December last year.

The program is being managed by VicRoads and testing began late last year.

No specific date has been given for the start of the road tests, with Victorian Roads Minister Jaala Pulford saying on Monday that the testing would get underway "soon".

The grant program is managed by VicRoads and funded by the TAC through the Towards Zero Action Plan, which aims to reduce the number of road deaths.
