AGRA: Instead of taking action against its own doctors for doing private practice, AMU’s vice chancellor, Tariq Mansoor, has threatened to get FIRs registered against private hospitals who will employ or allow doctors from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Dr ZA Dental College to work privately.
In a circular, which is bound to create a controversy, the varsity’s Registrar, Abdul Hamid, has stated that the University reserves its right to take legal action and lodge FIR against the private hospitals for illegally using services of Univeristy doctors”.

Dubbing the order as an “eyewash”, a senior doctor said the VC, who was earlier the principal of the medical college, is well aware of the doctors who are doing private practice with some even running their own private hospitals. Instead of taking action against them, he had chosen to target private hospitals, where nothing will be proved.
According to the circular, some doctors of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Dr ZA Dental College have been found absent from their departments/hospital during regular duty hours especially after 12:30 pm. The VC has directed the dean, principal and head of departments concerned to ensure their presence during regular duty hours.
“Doing private practice at various hospitals during regular duty hours is against the University rules and the dean, principals and chairmen are directed to send names of the doctors missing from their duty hours for necessary action,” stated the circular.
Aligarh Muslim University Teachers Association’s (AMUTA) Secretary Najmul Islam said that every doctor gives an undertaking at the time of their joining for not indulging in private practice. “If someone violates rules, the university can take action against them. Why this circular which means nothing except a publicity stunt,” said Islam.

He added that the VC can issue a showcause notice directly to the doctor allegedly involved in private practice. And if the administration doesn’t find the accused doctor’s response appropriate, they can take action against him.
“Unfortunately, the attendance of only those doctors is being checked who are not involved in private practice,” said Islam while adding that the “real black sheep” remain untouchable due their connections.
When contacted, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Aligarh unit’s president Dr Sanjeev Kumar said, “Its a funny order”. How can the university take action against private hospitals, questioned Dr Kumar. He added that the university should apply its rules to its own doctors.
