Mysuru boy chosen for ISRO's young scientist programme
Mysuru boy Bharatheswar M is one of only three students from Karnataka who have got to participate in the Young Scientist programme or Yuva Vigyani Karyakram (YUVIKA) organised by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization). The initiative aims at imparting basic knowledge on space technology, applications and space science to school students to ignite an interest in the subject.
This was the first young scientist programme held in the country by ISRO. The selection of students was based on their performances in high school, which includes both academic and extracurricular activities.
Bharatheswar, a student of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, says, “108 students from across India participated in the young scientist programme. From Karnataka, only three were selected, and I am lucky to have got the golden opportunity. I got to know about ISTRAC (Isro Telemetry, Tracking and Command network) work and got to see craters on the moon through a high-powered telescope. We also tracked the International Space Station, which was quite interesting. After a few days at the UR Rao Satellite Centre in Bengaluru, we went to Sriharikota, where we got to interact with ISRO chairman K Sivan, who gave us insights on space. He was clear about what they expect from the younger generation to make Indian a dominant force in space science.”
