Number of Cinema Halls on Increase, Number of Theater Halls on Decrease in Turkey

The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has shared statistics on cinema and theater in Turkey for 2018.

While the number of cinema halls across Turkey increased by 6.2 percent in comparison with 2017 and became 2 thousand 858, there was a 6-percent decrease in the number of theater halls in the 2017-2018 season.

There are only two provinces in Turkey without cinema halls: Turkey's eastern province of Ardahan and southeastern province of Şırnak.

CINEMA

Cinema audience fell by 5.4 percent

When compared to the figures in 2017, the number of cinema halls across Turkey became 2 thousand 858 in 2018, marking a 6.2 percent increase. Accordingly, the seating capacity of cinema halls in Turkey also increased by 4.2 percent and reached 342 thousand 813.

As for the cinema audience in 2018, it fell by 5.4 percent when compared to 2017 and were measured as 64 million 772 thousand 380 people. While the audience of domestic films increased by 3.4 percent in this one-year period, the audience of foreign films decreased by 16.4 percent.

The number of films screened in 2018 was measured as 65 thousand 501, accounting for a 12.5-percent increase in comparison with the previous year.

On the other side, there are no cinema halls in Ardahan and Şırnak.

THEATER

6-percent decrease in number of theater halls

In the season of 2017-2018, the number of theater halls across Turkey decreased by 6 percent when compared with the prior season. As for their seating capacity, it increased by 9.5 percent in the same period. Accordingly, the number of theater halls in Turkey was 736 and their seating capacity was 314 thousand 479 in the 2017-2018 season.

Theater performances increased by 6.6 percent

The number of theater performances across Turkey increased by 6.6 percent in the season of 2017-2018 and reached 33 thousand 772 performances.

In this season, the total number of theater audience was measured as 7 million 841 thousand 353, marking a 11.9 percent increase.

3-percent increase in number of children's works

In the season of 2017-2018, the number of theater performances for adults increased by 6.6 percent in comparison with the previous season and the number of performances for children increased by 3 percent. In the same period, the audience of children's plays showed an increase of 9.1 percent. (AÖ/SD)
