Tamil Nadu will have the highest number of smart cities under the Government of India’s eponymous Mission, even though the State has been slow in executing this project.

Eleven Tamil Nadu cities have been selected for development under the Smart City Mission. They are Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli, Erode, Madurai, Salem, Tirupur, Thanjavur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Vellore

A highly industrialised Maharashtra will be executing smart city projects in eight locations, while the most populous State, Uttar Pradesh, will implement the project at 10 places. Six cities have been chosen in Gujarat and seven in Madhya Pradesh.

Smart city projects

In the South, Karnataka will execute projects in seven locations and Andhra Pradesh in four cities. Telangana and Kerala will have two locations under the smart city project.

Though ahead in numbers, in terms of project completion, Tamil Nadu has been lagging several States. As on June 18, 309 projects worth ₹12,111 crore have been tendered in Tamil Nadu. Of these, 49 projects worth ₹448 crore have been completed, while work orders have been issued for 211 projects worth ₹9,806 crore. The Centre has provided the state Government ₹2,158 crore for this project.

Madhya Pradesh tops in smart city project completion, followed by Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

Completed projects

Madhya Pradesh has completed 129 projects worth ₹2,406 crore, while Gujarat has done 121 projects worth ₹3,138 crore, according to the information provided by Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs.

Uttar Pradesh has completed 118 projects worth ₹3,332 crore, while Karnataka has done 110 projects worth ₹726 crore.

As on June 19, 896 smart city projects worth ₹14,847 crore have been completed across the country. Work orders have been issued for 1,895 projects worth ₹74,038 crore.

The Smart Cities Mission (SCM) was launched on June 25, 2015 for the development of 100 smart cities across the country.

These cities were shortlisted based on an all-India competition. Twenty of them were selected in Round-1 in January 2016; 13 in the Fast Track Round in May 2016; 27 in Round 2 in September 2016; 30 in Round 3 in June 2017, 9 in Round 4 in January 2018, and one city was selected in June 2018. The timeline for completion of projects under the four rounds is 2022-23.
