JALPAIGURI: Violence erupted at Gairkata in the Dooars, Jalpaiguri after the death of a 24-year-old youth, Raju Chhetri, who was trampled by a jumbo on Saturday night.
Another man, Ujjwal Mohonto (54), also sustained injuries after the elephant attacked him. He is undergoing treatment at Jalpaiguri super speciality hospital. An elephant had entered the Hindu Para in the Gairkata vicinity on Saturday night when Chhetri was returning home.
He encountered the jumbo on the way and was trampled to death. The animal then chased and attacked Mohonto riding by on a cycle. The elephant damaged a few houses on its way back to the forest.
Claiming that the officials were not doing enough to prevent elephants from straying out of forests, locals went on the rampage at the Moraghat beat office. A large team from Banerhat police station and foresters from Binnaguri Range office had to rush to the office to control the situation.
