(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) Indian Police have arrested three Sri Lankan nationals, who arrived at Vedaranyam in Nagapattinam district on Saturday night on charges of crossing Indian waters without valid travel documents, the Press Trust of India reported today.
Subsequently, police recovered a Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) boat on which they crossed the Indian waters.
The people have been identified as A R Nigas, 23, a native of Takva Nagar, Moothur in Trikomalee, M Mohammed Rajees, 33, a native of Neidhal Nagar, Moothur in Trikomalee and V Vaseekaran, 20, a resident of Dharumapuram, Kallaru in Kilinochi in Sri Lanka.
They reached Vedaranyam at around 11.30 pm on Saturday by a FRP boat, where they were picked by Vedaranyam marine police headed by inspector Jothimuthuramalingam.
According to marine police, while the team was on their routine night patrol along the coastal in Vedaranyam, they had noticed that three people were roaming around in the area in a suspicious manner.
When the team inquired with them, they came to know that all the three were from Sri Lanka and had crossed the Indian waters by the boat carrying a 20-litre diesel container and fishing net, which was seized by the police.
The Sri Lankan nationals used the boat - named as GVM-392 Givinda Marine, using a 40 HP motor. Though they had crossed the Indian waters, they had neither possessed any valid documents to travel to India nor did they have the passport.
We have commenced the investigation process to ascertain the purpose of their visit, sources from marine police said.
