BENGALURU: Three conmen in Bengaluru used an elaborate ploy, involving the promise of a Rs 1-crore loan and the use of a Mercedes Benz with hard cash in the boot, to make away with Rs 13 lakh from a 45-year-old tax consultant from Coimbatore.
Police on Monday said D Ramaswamy, a resident of Peelamedu in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, was looking for a business loan of Rs 3 crore. He contacted Omkar Finance and Royal Finance after coming across the firm on the internet.
“Three people identifying themselves as Nikesh, Vinod and Sanjay, called me over phone and said they were agents of Omkar Finance and Royal Finance.
They gave me details about loans the company offered,” Ramaswamy stated in his complaint to Ulsoor police. “They collected the information about me and asked why I needed the loan before directing me to meet them at a star hotel on MG Road on June 26.”
The men told Ramaswamy that they would arrange for a loan of Rs 1 crore for a commission of Rs 13.8 lakh. He agreed to the terms and met the trio at the hotel.
“I reached there at 1pm and three men walked in a little later,” Ramaswamy said. “After lunch at a restaurant in the hotel, they took me to a Mercedes Benz (KA 01 MF 2400) in the parking lot and showed me bundles of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 notes in its boot. They told me that it was the money that they would lend me.”
“I had no reason to distrust them, so I gave them Rs 13.8 lakh in cash and we returned to our table in the restaurant,” he said. “Then, one after the other, they excused themselves to go to the rest room. I soon sensed that something was amiss, but by the time I rushed to the parking lot, the Benz was gone. I called the three men on their cellphones, but they were switched off.”
“Why did Ramaswamy trust in the cheats without any hesitation? For one, they managed to arrange for a Mercedes Benz for the con job. They also paid for the lunch they had at a star hotel,” an investigating officer told TOI.
“But evidence the conmen left behind should help us solve the case soon,” he said. “We have clear images of their faces in surveillance footage from cameras located all over the hotel. The victim said he saw a layers of notes placed in the boot of the Benz. It looks like the work of a professional gang of cheats who planned the crime meticulously and had some quantity of hard cash.”
