MUZAFFARPUR: Another kid died due to acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) at the Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) on late Sunday night. While one new patient with symptoms similar to those of AES was admitted to the Kejriwal Matri Sadan on Monday morning, two were admitted to the SKMCH.
With this, the total death toll due to AES has now surged to 136 in Muzaffarpur. At least 25 children are still undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, most private and government schools in Muzaffarpur resumed classes on Saturday, after a one-and-a-half-month summer vacation.
However, many of them, whose students were affected by AES, witnessed zero attendance.
The Government Primary School at Wajid Musahar of Sakra block witnessed thin attendance of students. All the four teachers were present and busy doing their office work.
Government Primary School teacher Sanjay Kumar told this newspaper, “Parents did not send their kids to school, apprehending the spread of AES. Although the skies were partly cloudy, there was excessive heat and humidity in the atmosphere.”
Most schools in Musahari block, which is the worst-affected one with 18 deaths, wore a deserted look as only teachers were present.
Musahar Tola resident Alok Manjhi, who did not send his kid to school, said, “The temperature is high along with the presence of humidity. This is the most favourable condition for the spread of AES. How can we send children to schools if this weather prevails?”
