MUZAFFARPUR: A police constable allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver at his official residence at Police Line Colony under the Ahiapur police station area in the town on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday.
The constable, identified as Ajay Kumar Ram (35), was a resident of Rivilganj in Saran district. He was included in the district police in 2008.
Muzaffarpur SSP Manoj Kumar said the incident took place on the Police Line campus.
“It is very tragic and shocking for us. I was informed by the sergeant major of police line over the phone about the incident. When I reached there, the constable had already died,” he said.
Mukesh Kumar, another constable, said the incident occurred when he was going to retire on his bed after returning from his duty. “After hearing a gunshot, I rushed to Ram’s residence along with my fellow colleagues. After entering the room, we found Ram dead. A bullet pierced his neck. His family members were crying. We later informed our superiors, including SSP, deputy SP and others,” he said.
The SSP said the police were inquiring into the matter. “Ram was a recruit of 2008 batch and he was deputed here in 2010. He had served in many places of the district. He was in police line for last four years,” the SSP said, adding Ram’s body was handed over to his family members after autopsy at Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital.
Asked about the reason behind the incident, the SSP said it would be premature to say anything. “The exact reason will be known after thorough investigation,” Kumar said.
Ram’s wife was admitted to a private nursing home after her health deteriorated following the incident. The constable is survived by his wife and two children.
