Abandoned building blown up in Birbhum explosion
Labhpur: An abandoned building which was used as staff quarters within the premises of Dwarka Primary Health Centre in Dwarka village of Birbhum’s Labhpur was blown up in a bomb blast early on Thursday.
Labhpur MLA Manirul Islam recently defected to BJP from Trinamool.
The main building of the primary health centre lies 50 feet away. No patient or medical staff was inside that building then.
A police camp, incidentally, lies at a stone’s distance from the health centre. Labhpur block’s chief medical officer (BMOH) Buddhadeb Murmu said, “Hospital services were not affected in the blast which did not affect the main building.”
Soon after, a team led by Labhpur OC Chayan Ghosh reached the spot. No one has been either identified as a suspect or arrested in connection with the blast.
The single-storied 1,500 square feet building was in a dilapidated condition. It has been lying unoccupied and abandoned for the last five to seven years, said locals. Dwarka resident Sajal Mondal said, “Kids play in and around the abandoned building. Locals used it as a godown to stock fire wood.” Living close to the health centre, Mir Jahan Sheikh, said, “I heard a loud bang around 3 am and came out. I was stunned to see a building of the health centre had been brought down. Some bricks flew off and hit my roof, bringing down a fan in my house.”
Local Trinamool leaders accused police of inaction after the blast. Kajal Ray, Labhpur Trinamool leader, said, “We have been long demanding action against local goons in the area and have asked police a number of times to conduct raids on dens where bombs are stick-piled. But police have been completely inactive. This is an outcome of such inaction. BJP-backed goons are behind this blast. We demand removal of the present Labhpur OC.”
