Parts of Mumbai, north India to see heavy rain, thunderstorms today

Parts of suburban Mumbai and northern India will receive moderate to heavy rainfall on Thursday.

Parts of Maharashtra will be receiving moderate to heavy rain on Thursday while a few isolated places will witness thundershower and lightning.

According to Skymet, areas such as Alibagh, Kolhapur, Mumbai, Mumbai suburban, Nagpur, Palghar, Pune, Raigarh, Ratnagiri, Sangli, Satara, Sindhudurg and Thane will witness a few spells of moderate to heavy rain and thundershower at many places with lightning at isolated places.

Parts of Haryana would see thunderstorms accompanied with rain and gusty winds (wind speed 30-40km/hr) over Jhajjar, Matanhail, Pundri (Kaithal) and adjoining areas in the next two hours.

On Wednesday, rainfall occurred at many places in the western and eastern parts of the country while there was no relief from the scorching heat in most of the northern region.

With the onset of monsoon in Gujarat on Tuesday, some parts of Saurashtra and the southern part of the state witnessed heavy rainfall. Several other districts also received rainfall, the emergency operation centre said.

In Mumbai, only light showers were witnessed on Wednesday morning in areas like Andheri and Santacruz, a day after onset of the south-west monsoon was announced in Maharashtra.

Goa also received heavy rainfall at isolated places on Wednesday. Rainfall occurred at most of the places in West Bengal and Sikkim. There were thunderstorms at isolated places in the Northeast and the southern part of the country.

Delhi recorded a temperature of 41 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, four notches above normal, as rains continued to play truant. The weather department has forecast similar conditions for another two-three days and rains are likely after Sunday.

Parts of western Rajasthan were lashed by light to moderate rain, bringing respite from the scorching heatwave. Bikaner recorded the highest maximum temperature at 43.5 degrees Celsius, a meteorological department official said.

Uttar Pradesh will likely receive rainfall at isolated places on Thursday. Hot and humid weather prevailed in Lucknow, with a maximum temperature of 39.1 degrees Celsius, four degrees above the normal, the Met office said.

Allahabad was the hottest place in the state, with the mercury soaring to 42.3 degrees Celsius, six degrees above the normal.

Heatwave conditions prevailed in Jammu as the mercury soared to 41.6 degrees Celsius, nearly 4 notches above normal. Srinagar, on the other hand, continued to witness a pleasant weather at a high of 28.4 degrees and a low of 12.5 degrees Celsius.

Chandigarh recorded a maximum temperature of 38.7 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal. Amritsar in Punjab recorded a maximum temperature of 41.5 degrees Celsius, four degrees above normal. The maximum temperature in Ambala and Hisar was 40.2 degrees and 40.5 degrees, respectively.

In Himachal Pradesh, the maximum temperatures have increased by two-three notches as the weather remained mainly dry. Una continued to be the hottest place in the state with a high of 39.4 degrees Celsius, while Shimla recorded a maximum of 26.3 degrees.
