A £55m housing development could see 'build-your-own' homes quite literally dropped into one area of Merseyside.

Landowners Peel L&P has submitted plans for a tailor-made housing project it says could transform Birkenhead's waterfront into an "international" destination.

The plans, submitted with regeneration company Urban Splash, will see 347 modular, factory-built homes delivered at the Wirral Waters site if approved.

Modular homes are pre-built homes which have taken off in many forms across the UK to address the country's growing housing crisis, including in Speke.

However, Urban Splash is bringing its award winning modular concept 'House' to Merseyside to the first time - and it comes with a very unique catch.

What are build-your-own homes?

The properties have been described as a  completely new type of family-friendly home that can be specified to suit your way of life.

Each will be customisable by purchasers before being created off-site in the Urban Splash modular factory and then delivered to site.

All properties will  come with tall ceilings, large windows and space for parking. However, everything else is left to the imagination of the owner.

Customers can choose anything from the number of floors and rooms to the finish of the floors, stairs and kitchen units before their dream homes are built.

People can design  their homes on the company's website, where they can choose between open plan living and cosy small scale nooks or 'garden living' and loft-style houses where the bedrooms are down stairs and the living room upstairs.

What will the scheme look like?

Urban Splash's 'House' scheme has already been completed and fully sold out at New Islington in Manchester.

A video promoting the 'House' concept said homes are made in the factory within three months and described the scheme as a "canal side oasis".

A CGI image suggests the Birkenhead scheme will look similar, creating a modern residential quarter on the town's waterfront.

Richard Mawdsley, director of development at Peel L&P, said this would create an 'internationally recognised' waterfront development as well as addressing the region's house shortage.

The development boss said: “We have entered in to a joint venture with Urban Splash to deliver this project because it is unique in that it will bring the very latest in modular housing design and innovation to Wirral Waters.

“If approved, our Urban Splash development will not only tackle the housing crisis and take the pressure off our greenbelts but it will transform the site into a highly contemporary, internationally recognised waterside residential quarter for families, individuals and couples wanting to make Wirral Waters their home.”

What else is planned for Birkenhead?

'House' is the latest plan to be revealed for the ambitious Wirral Waters Scheme on former dockland in Birkenhead.

Earlier this week, planning was approved for a multi-million pound business hub on Tower Road.
