India pushed to finish talks

Acting Commerce Minister Chutima Bunyapraphasara is on a three-day visit to India to convince it to finish all negotiations relating to the Regional Comphrehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) by the end of the year.

Ms Chutima said on Sunday that she is due to meet Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, for the first time since India wrapped up its general elections in May.

"During this trip, Asean Secretariat and the Indonesian Minister of Trade, as the coordinator for RCEP negotiation, will join us to push India to reach a conclusion on RCEP negotiations as soon as possible, especially on the opening of goods, services and investment markets, investment protection and regulations relating to market liberalisation," she said.

The RCEP is a proposed free-trade agreement between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) 10 member nations, along with Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.

Representatives from the 16 countries are scheduled to meet in Zhengzhou, China later this month, shortly before the RCEP Ministerial Meeting on Aug 3.

Thailand expects to close up the negotiations, which began in 2012, at the Asean Summit in November.
