The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai for next 24 hours and placed the country's financial capital and the coastal Konkan region on "red alert".

Earlier in the day, flight operations were severely hit due to heavy rain and poor visibility at the Mumbai airport.

Meanwhile, a wall collapsed in the Andheri East area of the city. The incident happened at the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation on Monday morning.

One person sustained minor injuries when the wall came down at the Paper Box Industrial Estate and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Soon after the incident was reported, police and civic authorities reached the spot to clear up the debris.

Last week, 27 people died and more than 120 injured after a compound wall collapsed in the Pimpripada area of Malad East due to heavy rainfall.

Raigad, Thane and Palghar will have similar weather conditions on Tuesday, said IMD while Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg will witness heavy to very heavy rain till Friday, said IMD.

23:22: A proposed strike by autorickshaw drivers in Mumbai Tuesday was called off after Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis agreed to hold a meeting with union leaders to discuss their demands, PTI reported.

Autorickshaw drivers had threatened to go on a strike in support of their demands, which included a hike in fares.

Fadnavis will Tuesday chair the meeting which will be attended by representatives of auto unions in Mumbai, said a government official Monday night.

The state transport department has given its nod to civic transport undertaking BEST to reduce its minimum fare to 5, a move aimed at improving ridership on short routes which are also served by autorickshaw.

The new minimum fare will come into affect from 9 July.

21:35: A total of 11 flights were cancelled and another three diverted Monday due to heavy rains that briefly affected operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport here, an official told PTI.

As the visibility dropped below the required level for aircraft movement due to heavy showers, the runway remained closed for operations for nearly 20 minutes, resulting in cancellation of 11 flights, said a Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) spokesperson.

All the cancelled flights were of private carrier IndiGo, he said.

Of the 11 cancelled flights, eight were departures and three arrivals.

Besides, another three flights of the airline were diverted to the nearby airports due to the downpour.

Heavy rains made a reappearance in Mumbai Monday after a hiatus, affecting road and rail traffic.

The suburbs received around 20 mm rainfall in just three hours starting 8.30 am, an IMD official said.

21:00: Demanding a crackdown on illegal auto-rickshaws, aggregator services like Ola-Uber, and a steep fare hike, around a million auto-rickshaws all over Maharashtra will launch an indefinite strike from midnight, a top union leader said here on Monday.

"Our main demands are: a crackdown on illegal auto-rickshaws which hits the business of the licensed auto-rickshaws, a ban on Ola-Uber services which flout government regulations besides hampering the three-wheelers' business and a hike in auto fares," Auto-Rickshaw Chalak Malak Sanghatana Joint Action Committee chief Shashank Rao told IANS.

The other demands comprise implementation of the Hakim Committee Report, a hike of 4-6 per km in the fare, stringent control over issuing new permits, a welfare board for auto-drivers with facilities like provident fund, medical and employees state insurance scheme, he added.

Rao said a majority of the 1.2 million auto-rickshaws and over two million auto-rickshaw owner-or-drivers affiliated to around 300 big and small unions across the state will join the agitation.

19:50: Mumbai police urged public to take precautions as IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall (upto 200 mm) in the next 24 hours and that they should dial 100 in the case of any emergency.

18:44: Even as Mumbai is getting battered by heavy rains on Monday, multiple videos and images are surfacing on Twitter on how vehicles are wading through the muck.

18:15: Central Railway tweeted that due to its staff's unrelenting efforts the train service has been mostly normal on the main line and also on the harbour line.

17:26: People have been sharing videos and pictures of waterlogged roads of the maximum city on Twitter.
