SALEM, Ore. – A person was critically injured in a house fire in Salem early Thursday morning, fire officials said.

Salem Fire responded to the incident at 190 Rosemont Ave. NW at around 1 a.m.

Salem Fire says that there were five people in the home at the time of the fire, four got out safely. The woman in critical condition was found in the basement, where the fire started.

Homeowner John Adams said that the female victim fell asleep smoking a cigarette in her bed downstairs. Salem Fire hasn’t confirmed the cause.

Salem Fire credited the family dog with alerting the family to the fire, as there were no working smoke detectors.

Adams said that he did not expect to be able to get back into the home this evening.
