BENGALURU: A thief who targeted houses in Bengaluru had a modus operandi peculiar enough to give himself away after a recent spate of burglaries in the city — police identified his signature moves and arrested him in Mysuru late on Wednesday.
After grainy surveillance footage from crime scenes in Vijayanagar, Kamakshipalya and Basaveshwaranagar revealed that a single thief had carried out the burglaries, police found evidence that seemed to confirm that the perpetrator was 30-year-old B Prakash alias Jangli alias Vinay.

“Prakash breaks into houses only between 2am and 4am and enters by prying open the door with an iron rod,” said DCP (West) Ramesh Banoth, who formed a special team led by ACP HN Dharmendra to solve the burglaries. “Investigations at the crime scenes left us with little doubt about who the culprit was.”
“Two houses in Vijayanagar and one house each in Kamakshipalya and Basaveshwaranagar were burgled,” Banoth said. “Their doors were forced open with an iron rod. This was a common thread in all four cases. We collected records of burglars from several police stations to check for those who used this method to break into houses.”
The team soon had a long list of suspects. “Footage from CCTV cameras and the methods of the suspect helped us zero in on Prakash,” Dharmendra said. “We picked up Prakash in Mysuru and interrogated him. He admitted that he was the man we were looking for.”
Prakash, wanted in a dozen cases of burglary, would regularly move house to avoid being caught by police, Dharmendra said.
“A few years ago, he lived in different localities on the outskirts of Bengaluru,” the ACP said. “As cases piled up against him, he moved to Ramanagara for a while before deciding to stay in Mysuru.

Dharmendra said police arrested him from his house in IV Block, Vijayanagar, Mysuru.
“Boarding a train from Mysuru, Prakash would get down at the Ramanagara railway station, where he usually parked a motorcycle. He would ride the bike to Bengaluru, and recce localities for locked houses,” the ACP said. “He would visit bars near potential targets and chat up the staff for information about police on night beat in the neighbourhood before committing a burglary.”
Police recovered valuables worth Rs 25 lakh from him, including 833g of gold jewellery.
