The deceased have been identified as Monu Katiyar (27) and Arjun Kumar Singh (30), both residents of Bilhaur in Kanpur.
According to police, the youths were returning to Kanpur and they hit the expressway near Mohan Road around 11.15am. The MUV, ferrying sadhus of Kanchi Kamkothi Peeth to Lokariya in Bihar, was stationed on the side of the road and the bike rammed it from behind. “The bike came hurtling towards us at over 100kmph and the youths were not wearing helmets,” Sawai Singh, the driver of the MUV, told police. “I had stopped my vehicle on the extreme right to track the route using Google Maps. Maharaj and his three disciples were on the passenger seats and by god’s grace, escaped unhurt,” he added. Singh, whose MUV was badly damaged on impact, both informed police and called an ambulance for the bikers.
Para station house officer Triloki Singh said the youths were rushed to KGMU Trauma Centre, but were declared brought dead. “The driver of the other vehicle forgot his way and stopped to look for a guide map to Bihar. In the meantime, the youths on a bike rammed the vehicle from behind. They were without helmets,” the officer said, adding that the speeding angle was being probed.
Police have informed the bereaved families and the bodies are being preserved in mortuary till their arrival. “The youths were jobless. Arjun was married,” a source in police said.
