AMARAVATI: Decades long dream of backward Palnadu region in Guntur district in getting a government medical college is finally coming true. Finance minister Buggana Rajendranath Reddy has cleared the decks for setting up government medical college in Gurazala constituency when he granted Rs.66 crore in the budget presented in the assembly on Friday.
Local legislator Kasu Mahesh Reddy has been lobbying for the key health project ever since he got elected in the recent elections.
Mahesh, who prevailed upon the party supremo Jagan to make a promise on setting up medical college during the poll campaign, had constantly followed it up in the last one month.
Not to give scope for last-minute slip-ups, Mahesh met the chief minister Jagan on July, 3 and submitted him a representation seeking government medical college for his segment. “My leader has proved that he is man of deeds not mere words. This is going to be game-changer of the health-sector needs of Palnadu region,” said a jubilant Mahesh Reddy on Friday.
He explained that people of Palnadu region consisting Gurazala and Macherla constituencies are compelled travel up to 80-140 km to get better health care as they were available only in Guntur and Narasaraopet. He said that government medical college would automatically bring medical experts and super-specialty general hospital to the region. The new medical college is also expected to benefit several tribal and remote villages of Prakasam and Kurnool districts, which were close to Palnadu, as well.
State government had also sanctioned two more medical colleges one each to Vizianagaram district and tribal agency area. Finance minister spared Rs.66 crore to the each medical college project. By deciding to set up three medical colleges in the government sector, Jagan had truly followed the legacy of his late father YS Rajasekhara Reddy.
Significantly, YSR was the first CM to have launched three medical colleges (Srikakulam, Ongole and Adilabad) in the government sector almost five decades after the formation of (undivided) AP. “Medical college in the government sector is a big boon for students from under-privileged sections to pursue their dreams in medical education.
It also plays major role in bringing super-specialty medical care to the door-steps of poor in remote areas. CM Jagan’s decision is historical,” observed social activist and former AP medical council vice-chairman, Dr G Vijayasaradhi. He had also showered praises on Gurazala MLA Kasu Mahesh Reddy for relentlessly working to keep his promise.
