KOLKATA: A young woman police constable on her way home in plain clothes was allegedly molested by an
auto driver near
Tollygunge Metro station on Saturday night. The constable, however, took a photograph of the auto on her cellphone and called up officers of Regent Park
Traffic guard. Later in the night, cops arrested the man from his home and seized the auto.
The incident happened around 10pm on Saturday when the woman in her 20s had boarded the auto of route Garia-Tollygunge from
Ranikuthi.
"The woman alleged two of the passengers of the auto had got down near the
Uttam Kumar statue at Tollygunge crossing. Following which the driver allegedly started passing lewd comments and gestures ," said an officer of Lalbazar.
Police said, the woman, who did not disclose her official identity to the auto driver somehow got down at Tollygunge Metro station and took a photograph of the auto on his cellphone and walked towards her home at the Tollygunge Police Housing.
While walking back home, she dialed 100 and also an officer of Regent Park Traffic Guard she knew and told them about the incident. Sometime later, officers of Regent Park Police station went to her home and collected the written complaint from her.
On the basis of the complaint and the photographs, cops tracked down the auto driver, arrested him and seized his vehicle. The driver was identified as Tapan Debnath, a man in his 30s. "The timely presence of mind of the woman in taking a photograph of the auto has helped us in arresting him in quick time. We have booked him under sections related to outraging the modesty of a woman," said the officer.
