KOLKATA: Cops on Saturday night nabbed an accomplice of the Kolkata Police assistant sub-inspector who was arrested on July 9 for allegedly robbing a gold trader. The accomplice - Mithun Math (37) - was a resident of Krishnaganj, Nadia.
Police said Mithun used to sell artificial flowers and frequented Dum Dum to conduct business. On the day of the robbery, he followed the victim from Nadia station to Sealdah and helped the group identify him.
The gold trader, Bablu, had gone to Sealdah on July 10 for some business.
He was leaving Sealdah when an SUV blocked his way. ASI Ashish Chandra, who worked at the Kolkata Police's records section, allegedly told him that he was an officer from the Muchipara police station and demanded to see documents for the gold and cash he was carrying. The ASI claimed that the cash and gold were not accounted for and took those away. Bablu also alleged that Chandra snatched the gold rings he had on his fingers.
After robbing the merchant, Chandra, his associate Balai and driver Nepal Chandra Dhar dumped Bablu on Belgharia Expressway
Later, police arrested the ASI and two others and interrogated them. Based on their statements, cops traced Mithun and rounded him up. "He knew the victim as he belongs to same locality. He also knew Balai Sarkar of Dum Dum, who was arrested earlier," said a police officer from Lalbazar. Mithun got acquainted with Balai while selling his wares.
