SRINAGAR: Two CRPF constables on Monday saved a 14-year-old girl from drowning in Ferozpora Nallah of Tangmarg area in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.
Nageena, who belongs to a family of nomadic shepherds, was at the stream to wash clothes with other girls from the community when her headscarf fell into the water. In a bid to retrieve it, she slipped into the nallah and got carried away by the strong current.
Constables MG Naidu and N Upendra of CRPF’s 178Bn, part of a patrol team on duty in the area, heard her cries and immediately rushed to the rescue.
They jumped into the water and managed to pull her out of the gushing stream. The minor was taken to Tangmarg sub-district hospital for treatment.
A video of the heroic act went viral on social media. In the clip, the constables can be seen running towards the stream to save Nageena. They are later joined by others in the effort.
“I was out for some work when my distraught wife called me to inform about the accident. I rushed to the spot and was assured that my daughter had been rescued by two CRPF jawans,” said Nageena’s father Mohammad Sharief Din, a native of Jammu’s Nagrota. The family is presently living in the area to graze cattle.
Constable N Upendra said: “I was on area domination duty with my colleagues on Monday morning when we heard the cries of the drowning girl. We immediately jumped into the water and rescued her.”
DG CRPF Rajeev Rai Bhatnagar has announced DG’s commendation disc award and certificate in favour of the bravehearts.
