BENGALURU: A 31-year-old man was found dead in mysterious circumstances next to his unconscious wife in the bathroom of their residence in Ramamurthynagar on Monday night.
Ravi Theja, 31, and his wife Swathy Ravi, 29, natives of Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh, had been married for five years and did not have children, police said on Tuesday. Ravi worked with a finance firm on MG Road and Swathy was a homemaker.
Ravi’s sister, who went to the house after neither Ravi nor Swathy responded to phone calls, broke open the front door with help from a few neighbours around 10pm on Monday, police said.
She found the couple prone on the bathroom floor.
She rushed the couple to a nearby hospital where doctors declared Ravi dead. Swathy was moved to a specialty hospital. Her condition is said to be critical.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that Ravi and Swathy had been depressed because they did not have a child,” a police officer said. “They did not attend family events for more than a year. Ravi had recently been unwell and complained of chest pain.” Police suspect that the couple either consumed poison together in a suicide pact or Swathy attempted to kill herself after Ravi died of a heart attack.
“We are waiting for the postmortem report and for Swathy to regain consciousness,” the officer said.
Ravi had called his sister at 4 pm on Monday and invited her to dinner. “She went to the couple’s house at 7pm but found it locked,” the officer said. “She tried to call Ravi and Swathy several times, but there was no response and she returned home. When they did not answer calls for over three hours, she went back to their house.”
