FAKE ALERT: 2013 video viral as that of Dongri building collapse captured live
Key Highlights
  • A video from 2013 is being circulated widely with a claim that it shows the building collapse in Mumbai's Dongri.
  • A building in Tandel Street of Mumbai's Dongri collapsed yesterday killing at least 13.
  • The old video is being shared with a claim that it captured the collapse of the building in Dongri live.
CLAIM
Many social media users are sharing a video that shows a building collapse claiming it to be the live video of the one that collapsed in Mumbai's Dongri yesterday.
For instance, Facebook user Mohammed Nisaruddin shared the video yesterday with a caption saying, "Dongri Building Collapse Update 12 dead other injured person shifted to hospital Live video (sic)".
Facebook Post 1

As per his bio, Nisaruddin is a sub-editor with a media company that goes by the name of 'A99 News Voice of India'.
We searched on Facebook using keywords 'Dongri building collapse live video' and saw that the (unverified) Facebook page of the above mentioned media company ran the video as a Facebook live. The video has been viewed over 66,000 times.
Dongri Facebook Live Post

Twitter user @arpitajtweets shared the video saying, "Dongri building fall live captured video".

A building in Tandel Street in Mumbai's Dongri had collapsed yesterday killing at least 13. Rescue operations are still underway.
TRUTH
The video is of a building that collapsed in Thane in September, 2013 and not of the one that collapsed yesterday in Dongri.
In September 2013, a four-storey building named Banoo Apartments in Thane's Mumbra collapsed. The video that is being widely circulated is of this building coming crashing down.
VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGY
We analysed the video using InVid Google Chrome extension. On running reverse-image search on the extracted key frames, we found the same video uploaded to YouTube on September 1, 2017 claiming it to be of a building in Mumbai's Bhindi Bazar collapsing.

We then contacted Maharashtra Times Online editor Haaris Shaikh and asked him if he has come across this video before. He told Times Fact Check that this video has gone viral many times before and that this could be a building collapse that happened in Mumbra.
Taking a cue from what Shaikh said, we searched on Google with keywords 'Thane Mumbra building collapse' and found that the same video was uploaded to News18 Lokmat's official YouTube channel with the title, "Thane Mumbra building collapse" on September 21, 2013.
Here is the video:

VERDICT
Times Fact Check has found that the video that is being widely shared with a claim that it is of the building that collapsed in Mumbai's Dongri is actually from 2013 and of a building that collapsed in Thane's Mumbra.
