A North East university has been named one of the world's Top 100 universities in the Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2019.

Durham University has been placed in the 91-100 range of the rankings that are based on the world's largest survey of senior, published academics, which results in a list of the top 100 most respected universities.

To compile the rankings, scholars are asked to name up to 15 universities they believe are the best for research and teaching.

The ranking comes just weeks after Durham achieved 78 in the world in the QS World University Rankings and fifth in the UK in the Guardian University Guide 2020.

Professor Stuart Corbridge, Vice-Chancellor and Warden of Durham University , said: “Our inclusion in these global reputation rankings is a wonderful acknowledgement of the esteem that our academic peers have for Durham.

“It shows that we are recognised across the globe for inspiring the next generation through our teaching excellence, and for our boundary-breaking research.”

Durham physicists recently revealed how they are using supercomputer simulations to test alternative theories to explain how gravity works and galaxies form, beyond Einstein’s famous theory of General Relativity.

Together with partners, the university has also established the Residential Research Library to provide scholars from across the world the chance to visit Durham and study the outstanding range of special collections in the county.

Earlier this year, this work led to the discovery of a 400-year-old Royal Charter revealing fascinating insights into the early reign of King John.

Ellie Bothwell, rankings editor at Times Higher Education, said: “The Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings list only the top 100 university brands, based on the world’s largest invitation-only survey of senior, published academics.

“For Durham University to be included is a fantastic achievement, showing that it is considered to be one of the most prestigious higher education institutions across the globe by leading scholars.”
