Irvine's Ashleigh Seymour is five hours in to marathon swim across the English Channel.

The brave 36-year-old efforts have so far raised a whopping £2000 - double her initial goal- for a charity close to her heart.

Safe Passage is a charity that helps child refugees and vulnerable adults find safe, legal routes to sanctuary in the UK.

Ashleigh's dad, Jim Seymour told us: "Ashleigh started at 7.30am this morning and is making good steady progress.

"The sea is in an ideal condition for her swim and up to one hour ago she had raised £1,890.

"We are just about to enter the shipping lanes and tide is due to turn."

The former Greenwood Acdemy student took the plunge from Shakespeare Beach and is steadily swimming her way 21 miles to Cap Gris Nez.

Speaking ahead of the swim Ashleigh said:  “I’ve had to mentally prepare myself. It is said that the challenge is 20 per cent physical and 80 per cent mental.

“It is a very solitary sport which requires hours and hours and hours of positive self-talk and determination. I swim with a smile as much as possible.

“I don’t know if I’m excited. It’s more of a nervous anticipation. Some French champagne at the end would be nice though.”
