European and Gallagher Premiership champions Saracens have thanked the 'brilliant' Welsh import who has announced his departure to Major League Rugby in America.

It's been a whirlwind last couple of weeks for Wales international lock Dominic Day.

At end of June the player married his partner - model, Irish actress and I'm a Celebrity contestant Nadia Forde - in a remote area of Italy.

And on Tuesday this week his employers for the last two years, Saracens, announced the three-times-capped 33-year-old was following in the footsteps of former England flanker Steffon Armitage playing in the MLR for San Diego Legion next season.

Day was part of the 2015 Rugby World Cup squad after being decorated at U19 and U21 levels earning the last of his three caps in the win over Uruguay at the Principality Stadium.

His club career has taken in spells with the Scarlets, Bath, Japanese outfit Toyota Blitz and in Australia for the Melbourne Rebels in Super Rugby.

He made the move to Saracens near the end of the 2017 season and when playing for the star-studded first team was an influential figure for the club’s young talent in Storm’s run to the 2019 Premiership Rugby Shield title.

In all he played 32 first team games for the European and English heavyweights.

Director of Rugby Mark McCall told the Saracens website: “Dom has been a brilliant person to have at the club over the last two seasons.

"In particular he has played a key role in mentoring some of our younger players both on and off the field.

“We wish him and Nadia well as they embark on this exciting new challenge and will always be grateful to him for the huge contribution he has made at our club.”

Day said of his time in north London: "It’s been an amazing two years.

“I’ve met a lot of really good people and have been a part of a team which has won four trophies since I’ve been here.

“It’s been more than I could ever have asked for.

"Saracens are a massive club and pride themselves on being up there and winning things; being part of that has been amazing.”
