How does it work?
From July 1st to July 30th record your rides on the Trailforks app. Record a ride every day for all 30 days to be entered to win the Trek Slash. If you don’t ride every day, no sweat, you’ll still be entered to win sick daily prizes on the days you do record a ride. Trailforks software will automatically generate your contest entry, and notify you with a badge; a 30-Day Challenge Badge, and 30 Daily Badges are up for grabs. Trailforks does the leg work and provides online leaderboards to see how you stack up, so you can focus on your rides. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy!

Contest Rules
• All recorded rides must include at least one trail as mapped on Trailforks to count for the contest.

I really hope some broke kid wins the bike and not an expert enthusiast with half a dozen bikes already
On the other hand, with 1/2500 odds, Ill definitely settle for just some sick socks myself
  • 11 4
Yeah, I hope some student gets it and puts it for sale immediately so he can better fund his education. Oh wait... /s
  • 9 0
@Archimonde: a positive escape from the stress of studying will take you further than just trying to grind it out.
  • 4 3
I hope someone who played by the rules and didn’t just create an account for this one contest wins.
  • 24 1
As the broke kid who won the last Pinkbike giveaway, I can say it was a pretty impactful moment. (still riding it daily fwiw)
  • 2 1
@ddspaz: dude! You didn’t sell it after all? I’d love to hear more of your story.
  • 5 0
 @ddspaz: awesome!!!
One can dream to win Big Grin I'm a chick on my 30s, broke on money, but rich in life! I get to snowboard everyday in the winter (working at a ski-hill), and now I'm mnt biking everyday, because I love it and love seeing my progression. Riding a hand-me-down... would be so sweet to win this setup that I could never afford! and see how it could help me progress riding even more!
  • 2 0
I’m just not sure whether this beauty should ever be ridden. That paint job is fantastic and some mad guy smashing the rims within a week.... . Na, maybe a dentist should win it after all.
  • 2 0
@madeyephoto: I hope that if I don't win it then you do!
  • 6 0
@speed10: Nah I figured it was too much hassle to sell it, and not worth giving up such an amazing prize anyway. It's got about 1000 miles on it now, and I just got back from a month of living in my car, riding all the best trails in the western US!
  • 2 1
Broke hand-me-down kid here... Love a nice capable bike that'd fit well, but honestly, this is too nice for me... And @bizutch , per your comment below, that's dedication... Hope you guys win
  • 2 0
@mtbikeaddict: appreciate it. Hand me downs get upgraded with perseverance. Luckily you're in an era where even hand me downs work way better than the disposable easily outdated stuff we had in the last 2 decades. Big Grin
  • 1 0
@bizutch: Unfortunately my hardtail is more like that older hand-me-down type you referenced... I'm not sure what upgrades would be compatible, except grips lol. (Kidding, narrow aggressive tires would work). Actually, with enough cash research and fiddling, I could probably find something to change with the bars/stem, drivetrain, maybe fork,... Ok more than I thought... but at that point it's not worth it. Saving for a full squish hand me down from the last decade, hopefully. Smile But I digress. This isn't about me. You guys are putting in lot of work, it's entertaining reading your bear encounters lol, and PB/RTE/Trek and co put up great prizes... Salute
  • 1 0
@mtbikeaddict: I empathize. Just bought my 1st new trail bike in over a decade. Had an 06 Turner until Christmas. Keep at it
  • 3 0
and now a little over 2000 of us across the globe who made it out all 30 days act like we're the only one that deserves the bike and sit....waiting for them to call someone else's name. Smile
  • 2 0
@bizutch: apart of me wants ddspaz to win the trek, but Hopefully I win. It was a good challenge and My bike and my bike are feeling it.
  • 1 1
@speed10: Lol but that webt over my head... why? He won the Ibis
  • 1 0
@speed10: I snapped a spoke on day 30 which ended my streak luckily after I'd gotten halfway through my planned ride, ironically of all things in a berm. Was gonna keep going to make it an even 31 day month (which would have made it technically for me 32 days cause I rode the day before the contest started)
  • 1 0
@mtbikeaddict: yeah- it’d be sick if he won two major prizes. And then something from the advert calendar.
  • 3 0
@bizutch: stopped by a broken spoke? C’mon man, push through. My bike is thrashed. A lil wobble can’t stop ya. lol.
  • 1 1
@speed10: Isn't spread the love better than rich get richer?
  • 1 1
@bizutch: Are you serious? How would one snapped spoke stop you? And after you dealt with bears and whatnot.. Lol spooks you can deal with, but spokes... Wink Plus how'd you get back to the car/finish the ride but not the trail? On the last day? I'd ride till inoperable then crawl and drag my bike the rest of the way... Forgive me but I'm confused... Unless you're just messing with us, that doesn't make sense.
  • 1 0
@mtbikeaddict: na, he’s messing with you. He is position 1190 on the distance leaderboard. So he must have registered all days. Well done!
  • 2 1
@mitochris: LoL thanks. I'm no Sherlock but that smelled fishier than a riverbank in late fall.
  • 2 0
Stopped me from going to 31 in a row cause putting a wobble in my wheel is more expensive than dropping it at the shop for a new spoke and taking a well deserved rest day
  • 2 1
@bizutch: Ah, 31 for the month but not the challenge. My initial thought was day 30 of the challenge, hence my what the reaction. lol Redface
  • 1 0
@mtbikeaddict: Oh nah. I would have ridden that rim into murderous submission or drug it out if there was nothing left but a hub to make sure I got a trail in. Big Grin
  • 1 1
@bizutch: There we go, now we're on the same page... My bike handling skills could hardly save my life, but I'd wreck the rear then figure out how to stoppie/nose manual the rest of the way if necessary. lol I should've known. Facepalm lol Good luck! Big Grin
  • 1 0
@SpaghettiShredder: I am guessing not me, since I haven't heard anything. I hope whoever did win really needs a new bike.
  • 1 0
@SpaghettiShredder: they announced it- Spoiler: it wasn’t you. bit.ly/4kb77v

I'm giving it a shot regardless of the outcome. And I am getting worked doing it. She's been on all but 1 ride with me.

That's awesome! Is that a modified WeeHoo? The big tire would be way better than 20" I have. My kids always complain about bumps too much to get that far offroad with the stock WeeHoo.
  • 2 0
 You’re a good man
  • 3 0
@Bould170: Yep, super modded. Shortened wheelbase, added a proper fork with 100mm spacing, but clearance for all tires. 5.05's, 29 x 3.25 Crux, anything. The fat tires I can run about 2/3 psi for a pretty smooth, albeit very slow, ride. She has been liking the 29x2.3 at the moment.

I spent way too much money on the mods! But gotta keep riding somehow.
  • 2 0
@andwrong: Wow, you're awesome! I can't wait to take my kid on my rides.
  • 15 0
My odds to win the Slash could be 1 out of 2 and I still wouldn't win it. Not gonna stop me from riding everyday!
  • 3 10
flag masonstevens (Jul 17, 2019 at 13:50) (Below Threshold)
You're either going to win or you're not, so your odds are indeed 50/50. Good luck!
  • 24 0
The actual odds will be much lower than that. If we average the amount of riders who drop out of the streak every day and then estimate that average for the following days we can get a rough estimate. Here are the actual amounts of people who dropped every day so far taken from the leaderboards page and not from the data above (www.trailforks.com/contests/returntoearth) :
Day 2: 837
Day 3: 336
Day 4: 225
Day 5: 157
Day 6: 98
Day 7: 70
Day 8: 53
Day 9: 52
Day 10: 51
Day 11: 37
Day 12: 43
Day 13: 47
Day 14: 35
Day 15: 27
Day 16: 48
I think a fair estimate at this point is that 30-40 riders will probably drop out per day from now on. Even at the low end with 14 days left that is an additional 420 riders that will drop out by the 30th. That puts the odds at 1 in 1,986 or ~.0005%. Not great but much better odds than the lottery.
  • 12 2
@GBeard: you can math. that's real neat.
  • 10 1
@GBeard: This is a whole article in itself, "Return to Earth - Nerding Out" Beer
  • 7 2
@masonstevens: He probably doesn't need the bike as he is likely an accountant or statistician and rides with dentists and doctors every day ;-)

Although I do think that the number of people quitting will go down every day. so while it is average of 40 per day now likely 10 by the end.

So likely more like 2200 left at the end.
  • 1 1
@skidmarkbro LOL same I feel ya... I've been in a two person drawing and lost... And I live 15 min away from eligible trails... But 1 in 2-3k? Fuhgeddaboudit. lol
  • 3 0
@mtbikeaddict: Probably better odds than winning $100.00 in the lottery? Yet people pay for that.
  • 7 0
I actually forgot to move the decimal, the percentage is .05%. @fabwizard I actually ride with my brother most of the time and I am a high school dropout who has a 9 year old bike.
  • 16 1
I'm burning through bike parts in this challenge. On my second chain, split a tire, last night my dropper lever sheared off so 2 days I've ridden old school seat all up & remembered some insane old skills.
First ride my daughter told me the wrong place for a church outing and I was 45 minutes from the closest eligible trail but got a quick ride in almost blackness. Saturday I had a gnarly stomach bug & rode puking with a skull splitting headache, 2 days ago a hailstorm 2 minutes into a sufferfest of a ride, yesterday bluff charged hard TWICE by a big momma black bear, 1 morning got to the trail in the pitch dark. We're being hit by heavy storms out of Florida & I've ridden in multiple rainstorms.

Last but not least, the closest eligible trail is a 25 minute drive so I've logged 18 hours of DRIVING to & from the trails since July 1.
Streak at 17 days uninterrupted.
  • 7 0
@bizutch: This is your real life uphill-both-ways-to-school story. Tell this to your family every chance you get. They're going to loooove it!
  • 1 1
I dropped out at 15 because my name wasn’t on the leaderboard page after receiving all 15 badges on trailforks.
  • 4 0
@rrolly: they are living it daily.... and just like folks reading it, they could care less. Smile
  • 6 1
@GBeard: Another take on the math: 4,507 riders have earned badges from 58,869 rides in the last two weeks.

If we make a simple assumption that they all would have ridden trail twice a week anyway, it suggests the contest has generated an additional 40,841 rides two weeks in. ( 58,869 - 2 rides/wk*2 weeks*4507 riders.).

What could the cost of the extra rides be? In terms of values of parts, travel and time? If we assume $25 per ride the total cost to the contestants is north of a million dollars so far for all their extra effort or about $225 each.

Is the total value of all the prizes north of a million? Are all of the individual prize packs worth more than $225 each and do all 4,507 riders get one?

Another way of saying this is that for a comparatively small prize pool value - a few thousand - this contest is getting all of it's entrants to spend an awful lot of extra time and money on trying to win it - a few million.
  • 3 0
@ebrown123: that is interesting. Personally the only money I have spent so far is gas which is about 3$ per ride, and I normally ride every other day so that's an extra $27. My brother did break a chain though so $50 more for him. It's like the bike/gas economy stimulus contest, and you are supporting your LBS since no one can wait for shipping. On another note 56 people dropped out yesterday so I still think 30 people per day average is fair.
  • 2 0
Last night's ride had to go down at 8:15pm in near darkness on the trail parallel to where I saw the momma bear. She was BACK!!! Only this time, she eased off trail as I came up...and then 1 of her 2 cubs stood on his back feet and "GRARRRED" in the cutest little "Im a badass!!!" voice and I just kept pedaling in case it got momma thinking thoughts.
Hah...
  • 2 0
@bizutch: She recognized you. There's no way she was going to put you out of your misery. She wants to see you burn through more bike parts and mechanicals. August 1st, though, look out...
  • 1 0
@bizutch: Suggestion: ride a different trail? Wink lol
  • 1 0
@mtbikeaddict: technically I did. It runs parallel to the one I spotted her on last.

I didnt even mention the big owl that swooped down at 3 different people at dusk the night between the 2 bear rides. Big Grin

Critter update: The box turtle spotted on last night's ride...did NOT attack
  • 1 0
@ebrown123: Day 3 I split my hand open on a rock. $1000 ER bill and now the wound is healing weird so I may need to see a specialist to laser some dead skin and redo the stitching. Most expensive contest entry ever.
  • 1 0
@downhillhiro: take care of it sooner rather than later. really hate that for you. Just tell people it just as easily could happened tripping on the stairs...only the story would be lame. Wink
  • 1 0
Update: I rode a $7500 @mondraker Foxy demo Saturday. If its in your price range...wow!!!

So Sunday my bike got upset with me for whoring around on another bike...and puked its sealant & derailleur hanger at the end of the ride. Hah!!!

Back in biz today though....
  • 2 2
@masonstevens: you can jackass, that's neat.
  • 1 0
@bizutch: buddy, how do you even leave the house??? You're like Martin Short in Pure Luck (ya, I know, dated reference, but it fits)
  • 1 0
@rrolly: LAST NIGHT!!! I swung by my eye doc to grab my contacts before 5, drove the 10 minutes further to the trailhead (crossing the interstate that was SLAMMED DEAD STOP w/ Rush hour traffic) only to make 2 more turns and find a ROADBLOCK on the only route to the trailhead. Some sort of major accident.

Had to turn around and drive to another town 30 minutes away for last night's ride. Got home at near dark.
It's like the movie Final Destination where Fate wants to break the streak SO BAD!!! Wink

Found out later...it was this: wlos.com/news/local/brevard-road-closed-in-both-directions-near-parkway
  • 2 0
@bizutch: LOL! That bear saw you coming, looked at that tree, and was like, "hold my beer..."
  • 1 0
@rrolly: twice! Seriously, sure she bluff charged when me & my bud were between her and the cub, but then she went back up the bank, we were pretty well on our way and she did it the 2nd time when she saw me look over my shoulder 30-40 yards away still rolling?

She was one of those angry urban "don't make me tell you again boy!" momma bears.
  • 13 0
Well, obviously I didn’t win a daily prize because I’ll win the grand prize.
  • 8 0
Congrats to the winners! Also a big thank you so far for this challenge/contest. I accepted the challenge, and it’s given me more exercise, more time away from the world in the woods, and has got me hooked on mountain biking again like I was as a teenager. Used to bike all the time, then work, family, life made me busy, and it made excuses not to ride, very easy. This hasn’t taken time away from family or work, but has made me carve out a section of my day to get back to the woods and I love it. Thanks, and good luck to all who get a chance to ride an win prizes for doing so! Cheers.

glad to still be in the running, odds get better every day but i sure as hell know i wont win with my luck. still trying though, good luck to all 2437 people still in the running!!
  • 3 0
Loving this challenge. Given family and work life, finding the time to ride in all conditions every day has almost become all-consuming for me. It is an entire planning exercise based on weather, trail conditions, eligible trails based, how the legs are feeling and time available. Much more of a commitment than I thought when I first signed up, but really happy I did. Doing it all to keep the streak alive!
  • 3 0
Going out for day 18 soon. Before this challenge I never rode two days in a row (and I've been riding years). So far so good but taking a toll on the bike (time for a pivot service) and me, had a cold then sprained my toe. I will make it to day 30!! Shiny new bike or grips or nothing, I still win.
  • 4 0
Thanks for posting the numbers PB. Looks like my chances will be close to 1 out of 2000 for the bike, "So you're telling me there's a chance!"
  • 2 0
You can check the numbers daily here

My career has me immersed in understanding and applying motivation and habit research. Yet, I am still blown away by how motivated I am by the badges. I've ridden as early as 5:30 am and as late as 11 pm to get the ride in and keep the promise to myself. I really want to explore the app to see if it can be used at all for specific riding/training goals. And BIG thumbs up on the tech support. Have a great ride today everyone!
  • 3 0
pretty disappointed dirt jumping on trail forks sanctioned trails didn't count for the first 3 days anthill! Forget this swag, I'm riding for fun!
  • 6 0
 My ex-wife rides a trek!
  • 2 1
Sorry to bother you guys with dumb stuff, but i screwed up! I sweaty fat fingered my phone screen when i was uploading yesterdays ride and selected to keep my ride private, and now I'm not showing a badge for day 16. Can you take a look a that and see if i'm eligible for the the badge please? I gotta keep me in the running for the bike if possible!

Thank you!
  • 1 0
I think you can go back and make the ride public and maybe it would register with the contest?
  • 1 0
I have 3 days which haven't registered badges, bloody annoying really. @brianpark is it possible to fix this please?
  • 2 0
Had the same thing happen. Go to your ride in a browser, not the app, and there is a rescan badges link in the lower right. It worked right away for me.
  • 1 0
@evilllama: that did the trick.. thanks dude!
  • 3 0
@Blackers: Sometimes it misses segments. And if you don't complete at least 50% of a designates segment, it doesn't autotag. I had the same problem and found the answer here: www.trailforks.com/help/view/115

You just have to edit your ridelog and tag a trail you rode. Just watch the video in the link above.
  • 2 0
@dangry: Champion, thanks very much for this. Works exactly as the video described and the 3 badges I missed have now been awarded. Of course this means I now have to get off my fat ar$e and do the rest of the 30 days...........
  • 1 0
All but 2 of my rides that should have been eligible did not receive a badge. Yes, even though I completed multiple TF segments all the way through in the rides (as shown in the recording). Pretty annoying so I gave up on any chances. I’m curious how accurate all this data they’re collecting is since there seems to be so many others with similar data issues.
  • 2 0
Had to do another lap the other day because the GPS on my ancient phone malfunctioned and recorded only the start and end points. Mildly annoying, but crushed the uphill, haha.

So far rode in the morning, in the evening, at night, in rain and mud! I'm kinda proud of myself no matter the prizes Smile
  • 1 0
write to the developers through feedback. That is why I use both strava and TF because I had problems few times. But they sorted it out.
  • 1 0
@Milko3D: lol that happened to me one day too!
fml
I did a huge ride, but didn't quite touch the end of it on the gps, so it didn't count! Good thing I noticed right before it got too dark! and busted out a small trail by my house...lol
  • 3 0
@madeyephoto: Haha, well done! Do you ride alone?
There should be more contests like that, I'm having a lot of fun, same none of my friends are in it.

I hope the distance/elevation doesn't count, because I only record enough for the challenge - my phone lasts minutes when pushed to do fancy stuff like that.
  • 2 0

This might be causing some relationship strain.......can you win a new wife?
  • 3 0
Still in it and would love to win the bike. Would be cool if anyone who finished the 30 days got a shirt. Either way it's been fun and challenging so far.

Day 22, starting to chase unicorns through the bush now. Things I forgot were attached to my body hurt.. having an absolute blast! So far, I need a new bottom bracket...

This challenge taught me that I can always make time for a ride regardless of weather and other commitments.

Thanks pinkbike and congratulations to everyone who made it ????

My lbs says these cranks aren't available to purchase till September. If someone wins the bike they should auction the cranks- the first pair in existence!

Are winners notified in personal email or in pinkbike email?

I am also interested in the answer to this.

 @canadaka
any direction here?
  • 1 0
@downhillhiro: We are waiting on Anthill. There should be an article tomorrow, possibly today.
  • 1 0
@canadaka: what about when the first wave of daily winners was announced? Were they notified through their PB account or a personal email account? I just want to know where to look for any good news.
  • 1 0
@canadaka: I think most of us were expecting that article to be on Pinkbike. This was published on the August 8th:
anthillfilms.com/blog/30-day-ride-challenge-recap

Very strange that they got my name wrong and seem to have given my bike to someone else! Hmmpf.

Congrats to the winners!
  • 2 0
Was flying along on a streak until the 13th and then got food poisoning or something along those lines! Bye bye chances of winning!
  • 3 0
 Man up princess ;-)

Sorry had to do that.

I have been pretty close to quitting a few times, had a few good falls due to chasing stava times at 11 pm on rainy nights.

Nothing like having to crawl back to your bike in the pitch black because your lights unplugged and the only light is your crummy red blinky. And you remember that there is a cougar and black bear siting sign at the trailhead.
  • 1 0
@canadaka Does the notification about winning a prize go to e-mail, or also the Pinkbike Inbox? I check my pinkbike inbox every hour, but I don’t have access to the e-mail I made my pinbike account with 10+years ago.
  • 4 0
you check your pinkbike email every hour???

While road tripping I will legit drive 45 minutes out of the way, hike 3 miles in the dark, and fight off a grizzly bear to get that daily trail in.
  • 6 1
 So who won the bike?
  • 2 0
If I won please send another email, I have a bad habit of deleting things without actually reading them????
  • 1 0
 Still in it Razz
Never won anything online, and I doubt I'd luck out this time, but if I get a T-shirt, I'd be stoked Big Grin
Just few more days...

Unfortunately I had a car accident on JULY FRIGGIN 1ST right after I got back to town from a ride.... Not one day in the saddle since.
  • 1 0
Even though I rode everyday I’m missing a couple badges as it didn’t recognise that I rode a marked trail? Please pinkbike could you look into this ????????????

Does anyone know what size the bike is?

I'd assume they'd tailor that to the winner

@JOHNNYUTAH22: I thought as much, but my friends at work said that because its one of a kind, it may be a single frame in one size only.

@BradGarner: yeah I'm sure parts are already ready to go and then frame will be painted as soon as winner is announced, trek does the custom project one bikes on their webite pretty quick so I'd assume this would be just as fast if not faster due to the contest
