NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old man, who was declared brain dead after suffering a cardiac arrest, helped save the lives of at least six persons when his family consented to donate the organs.
Rohit Singh (name changed) was rushed to the emergency of Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, after he suffered a massive cardiac arrest in another hospital on July 12. Doctors said that he was already in a coma when brought to the hospital.
After thorough examination, it was found that his brain function was severely impacted, indicative of possible brain death.
“The patient was declared brain dead on July 13,” said Dr Omender Singh, director, institute of critical care medicine and ICU at Max. He said that the family decided to donate Singh’s organs on Tuesday.
His heart, liver and one kidney were transplanted to patients at Max, Saket, itself, while another kidney was shared with Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, officials said. The cornea was retrieved by Dr Shroff Charity Eye Hospital as allocated by NOTTO.
