Reds Win Three Of Five Games During First National Tournament in Williston

The Glasgow Reds wrapped up their regular season at the First National Tournament in Williston this past weekend, July 12 through July 14.

Their first game on July 12 ended in a tie after six innings against the Bismarck 15’s. Bismarck first got the game going with two runs in the first inning when Bismarck’s Lucas Schell doubled on a 3-1 count, scoring the two runs.

During the game, the Reds tallied seven hits with Kevin McDonald and Dylan Nieskens each having multiple hits. McDonald went three for three at the plate to lead the Reds in hits during the contest. JT Sprague pitched four innings throwing 81 pitches, achieving a strike percentage of .593 while Chase Guttenberg pitched the last two innings, throwing 25 pitches and achieved a strike percentage of .640.

The Reds worked hard at getting a better result during their next game, which was on July 13 against Burlington, N.D. After Burlington scored two runs right away in the bottom of the first inning, the Reds fought back later in the game by scoring runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, however could not get enough hits to beat the early lead made by Burlington.

Rance Rhoads took the loss for the Reds, surrendering six runs on four hits over four innings and striking out seven. Mark Eliason and Bryce Legare also took a turn on the mound and stopped Burlington's run, while only giving up two hits.

The Reds did collect five hits during the game, with Darrin Wersal and John Cremer achieving two hits to lead the Reds.

In the second game of July 13, the Reds stepped up to the plate and the mound early in the game. Kristian Price did not allow Medicine Hat to score any runs during the first inning, which allowed the Reds to gain an early lead in the bottom of the first by scoring 10 runs. Tel Aune set the tone right away when he drew a walk, scoring one run during the inning.

Singles by Kevin McDonald and Dylan Nieskens, doubles by Kaden Fossum and John Cremer, the walk by Aune and Darrin Wersal all contributed to the offense dominating the game.

Kristian Price got the win for the Reds, pitching five innings, allowing one run in the fourth inning, and striking out six. Cremer led the Reds with two hits in three at bats. Bryce Legare had seven chances in the field, which was the most on the team.

The Reds kept up with their winning momentum the next day on July 14 in the first game of the day against the Williston Oilers. The game got to a slow start after the Reds scored one run both in the top of the first and second innings, taking the game late in the game by scoring 12 runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Reds racked up a total of 12 hits during the game lead by Bryce Legare, Chase Guttenberg, Kevin McDonald, Kaden Fossum and John Cremer. Guttenberg and Legare each collected three hits, leading the Reds. Cale Swanson led the Reds with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with nine stolen bases.

Darrin Wersal earned the win for the Reds, pitching for four innings, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out eight. Mark Eliason finished out the game in relief.

The Reds would also go on to win their last game of the Tournament in the evening of July 14. As a pay-back for losing against Burlington, N.D. earlier in the tournament, the Reds brought their A game to the mound and plate, outscoring Burlington 6 to 2. The Reds got on the scoreboard early by scoring five runs in the top of the second inning and then scoring a lone run in the fourth inning. Kevin McDonald started the scoring by tripling on a 1-2 count, which brought in two runs.

Burlington couldn’t get on the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth inning, due to a solid outing on the mound by Gavin Adkins. Adkins collected the win, allowing five hits and two runs over six innings striking out five. Kevin McDonald threw the remaining inning in relief out of the bullpen.

The Reds totaled six hits in the game, with Dylan Nieskens and Tel Aune each collecting two hits to lead the Reds.
