NEW DELHI: A speeding Toyota sedan lost control and mowed down a cyclist at south Delhi’s Josip Broz Tito Marg on Tuesday evening. The driver, Abhishek Sharma (19), was arrested from the spot.
Police said that the accident happened in front of The Indian School at 6pm and the deceased has been identified as Yashpal. A case has been registered for causing death due to negligence and dangerous driving.
Yashpal was coming from Chirag Dilli side when the white sedan hit his cycle from behind.
A team of cops patrolling the area reached the spot and found Yashpal lying on the road in a pool of blood. He was taken to the AIIMS trauma centre but was declared dead on arrival.
The body was handed over to the family members on Wednesday after post mortem. Though the final autopsy report is awaited, doctors said the victim may have suffered multiple fractures and severe head injuries, which led to his death.
Police said that Sharma is a resident of south Delhi’s Greater Kailash and studying in a college. Officers said that preliminary investigation showed the teenager was driving the car at a high speed and suddenly lost control over it. Before he could halt the car, it crashed into the cycle.
