1705 vacant positions in NE Universities; 64 in Nagaland

A total of 1705 teaching positions in different categories are lying vacant across the universities in North East, informed a reply to an ‘Unstarred Question’ in Lok Sabha.  

The ‘Sanctioned Strength’ (SS) in universities across the region was 8184, out of which 6479 were currently ‘In Position’ (IP), reflecting a shortfall or ‘Vacant Position’ (SS-IP) of 1705. 

The details were given by the Minister of Human Resource Development, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ on July 15 as per the information received from University Grants Commission (UGC).

The minister was asked, among others, the details of posts lying vacant in the Universities of North East, University-wise and the time by which these vacant posts will be filled.

The query by M Badruddin Ajmal also sought information on teachers or employees working on temporary basis in these Universities. The UGC information based on the All India Survey of Higher Education, also informed the most vacant posts were in Assam with a shortfall of 1149 posts, followed by 282 and 240 respectively in Manipur and Meghalaya respectively. 

The Universities include central, state as well as private recognised universities.  

Status in Nagaland

As per the data in UGC’s website referred by the Minister, the difference between Sanctioned Strength (SS) and In Position (IP) in Nagaland was 64. 

5 universities from the state – two central and three privates – are listed in the database. 

According the figure, Nagaland University lead the pack with 62 vacant posts, mostly in Associate and Assistant Professor Level.  The shortfalls were 3 and 40 respectively.

Interestingly, in Professor Level, the current positions (56) were higher than the Sanctioned Strength (45) at NU. As a result the overall total was 256 (SS) - 194(IP) or 62 vacant posts. 

The vacancies in two states private universities – The Global Open University and St Joseph University – were 4 each. 
All the post in the other private University - Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI), Dimapur, was shown as filled. 

However, there was a surplus in the National Institute Technology faculty position with 39 SS and 45 IP. 

The data also informed that none of the teachers were working on “Temporary basis” in Nagaland while Assam and Manipur had 97 and 67 respectively. There were 15, 6 and 5 respectively in Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya respectively, taking the total to 191 across NE. 

According to the HRD Minister’s reply, the UGC in a letter date June 4, 2019 had prepared the Guidelines for Recruitment of Faculty in Universities, Colleges and Institutions Deemed to be Universities outlining the selection procedure and the time frame for recruitment.

 These guidelines have been circulated to all Universities to adhere to them. The Universities have also been requested to take steps to ensure that the vacancies in the University as well as in the Colleges affiliated to University are filled up at the earliest, it added.
